Scene Summary

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (September 22, 2025) — A man was shot in the hip Monday morning at Jack N. Sheldon Park in South Sacramento’s Florin area, according to officials.

Emergency medical services were called around 10:41 a.m. after reports of gunfire at the park on Orange Avenue. Deputies said the suspect, described as an older Hispanic male known by name, fled the scene in a van.

Scanner traffic later indicated that Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies located the suspect’s vehicle parked in the south lot of a Denny’s restaurant near Florin Road and 55th Street.

At the scene, deputies set up a perimeter around a pickup truck with a cab-over camper. Officers gave commands, and a shirtless male exited the camper. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Scanner Traffic, My Observations, Key Takeaways

From the scanner and on-scene observation, here’s what unfolded:

  • Gunshot residue test (GSR): Deputies performed a GSR test on the suspect’s hands. This test checks for particles left behind when a firearm is discharged. It helps investigators determine if someone recently fired a gun.

  • Field show-ups: Deputies conducted two field show-ups with the suspect. A show-up is when law enforcement briefly presents a detained person to witnesses or victims soon after an incident to confirm or rule out identification.

  • Search of vehicle: Deputies searched the pickup truck and camper. Inside the cab, they located a rifle.

The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment. His current condition has not yet been released.
